Mark: I can't answer the question about narrow front length. We had an H, 300 and SM all with narrow front. The H has been gone for 50 years, 300 gone for 30 years and I only owned the SM about two weeks in late 60s. My 560 and 656 both had wide fronts. Basically the topic never came up and since I only had wide front for 560, I would not have had anything to compare.
When one thinks about this why would the M, SM, 450 or 560 be any different. All had basically the same chassis and everytime IH increased the rear tire size they also increased the front tire size. Using that reasoning, I cant see why the narrow front from the first M in 1939 would be a different length from the last 656, 666 or 686 that was equipped with narrow front. I suspect they all had the same physical measurments.
