Charles: Is the tractor 6 or 12 volt? How large are the battery cables? The reason I ask, it sounds like 6 volt with too small cables, or bad connections. With 6 volt it should be minimum 01 guage cables, and 00 guage would be better. I even use those big cables on 12 volt systems, along with quality solder on ends. I find the best place to get these are shops doing heavy truck work.
A good set of cables for a tractor will cost $25., but will save big bucks on batteries and starters. I quite regularly get 5 to 7 years out of a battery, and last year I replaced a 6 volt after 13 years service in Canadian winters.
