The full-load rpms were 1400. No load rpm is 1540 (I&T manual). As to increased speeds: F-12 engine started out at 1400 full-load and went to 1650 with F-14. A does not have the same engine, but bore and stroke were same. Modern oils are much better than they were in the 30s. Were the manufacturers just playing it safe in keeping revs low? Obviously, I don't have the answer--just thinking out loud.
