I rebuilt my SA a couple of years ago, and wondered the same thing. I had the head planned enought to square it up, and had it completely rebuilt with new valves & guides. they re-ground the coutour on the rocker arms where they contacted the valve stems, and shimmed some of the springs. It got new valve seats too. Just like a new head. The pistons in mine were the old cast iron pistons with three upper & one lower ring. I went with the bigger bore and lighter aluminum step tops. I was worried about it being harder to crank, but it was not noticeable, it starts on the first lick now, never did that before. Enough power to mow tall grass in 3rd with the old Woods L59. Using whatever pump gas I want, and 10-30 oil. I also put in new main & rod bearings at the same time, runs like a new one maybe better. (1948 #250559)
