It sounds like a "one terminal" alternator, and if it's working, and "exciting" at a decent RPM, you're OK the way it is.
Leave the ammeter in place, and add a voltmeter, if that's what you think you need.
The voltmeter only requires a ground, and a source of battery voltage that is switched on and off by the ignition switch.
It's a "totally different animal" than an ameter, in that the charging current does NOT pass though the voltmeter on it's way to the battery, which is how an ammeter is set up. So, you CAN'T substitute one for the other without wiring changes.
