I would remove the water pump and side plates from the block to start with. Use compressed air and water/pressure washer to clean out as much as possible. Sometimes filling with water then hitting with an air wand under the water can stir it up and flush it out.
When you put it back together there should be some radiator flushes available to help get more out. Drain using the lower radiator hose so it comes out faster with more crud suspended in the water.
I think I've heard of using dishwashing detergent as well...
