Andrew. As long as you are doing experimental patches try yhis also. Do as Gene says, mow, roundup and disc. Then disc again, maybe three times, last time with very shallow depth and angle setting. Then brodcast the seed, and follow up with packer, or tooth harrow. No plowing. That rye or winter wheat is planted vey shallow and you shouldn't have to plow. Be sure and get a soil sample now so that if you need phosphorous, or potash you should apply that before you disc. Nitrogen will leech down quickly, but others tend to stay at the surface unless 'worked in'.
