I am completely rebuilding an I-4 that will also include a new clutch but I can tell you, I removed the clutch before I decided to do a complete tear down. In other words, you don't have to split the tractor to do it. The clutch comes out the top so you do have to remove all the stuff over it; gas tank, belt pulley, front gas tank support, etc.

A couple of other places to look: broken throw out fork, throw-out bearing support housing, or damaged pressure plate. If any of those need to be replaced, that can also be done without splitting the tractor.
