On tractors I use I grinde everything bright, screw the exhaust pipe in as good as I can get it (mainly worry about being vertical), start the tractor and get the manifold good and warm. Kill the tractor, weld the pipe into the manifold with ni-rod then start it back up to help it cool slowly. I have never had one fail and have been doing this for 30 years. The manifold might fail somewhere else, but not this joint, and as a plus you never get water leaking in like you do with a loose pipe.
If it is a good distillate manifold you might find you can sell it for pretty good money to a purist.
