don't dismiss all electric aftermarket tachs. anything you find at the quick sale retail places should be dismissed. however, by spending a few more dollars and some time finding a tach you like and a mounting pod or panel that suits your fancy, you might be more pleased with the outcome than an original mechanical one. Stewart-Warner makes a large variety of instruments, including tachs with much lower redlines than the "ricer" 9000rpm you're likely to find all over. they also still offer some mechanical or mechanical/electric combo instruments. another make of instruments would be VDO. and even the popular "rice" AutoMeter makes some heavy-duty products suitable for low rpm applications. you may find yourself mixing makes on the tach and mounting system, but in the end you will know you got exactly what you want. some companies get into custom instruments, but for a one time shot, it would be cost prohibitive. a place in MN that deals exclusively with instruments is D&D instruments, they have been pretty helpful when i've dealt with them for work, and sell directly to the public as well as wholesalers. -karl f
