Mike, There is only one way to properly prep parts for painting. First remove all old paint, grease etc. Then treat witht rust remover, metal prep solution. DuPont seel theirs under the name 'Metal Prep'. It's an acid wash followed by rinse. Then for tin you apply one coat of epoxy primer. This is waterproof, but should be covered with regular primer within two days. For cast iron you can coat with regular primer-surfacer only. But that is NOT waterproof and should be kept indoors until paint is applied. SO...you must either go all the way to paint with these parts or leave them alone until you start painting. Cleaning them up, and not painting them is the worst thing you can do. Save your time and effort, and get the thing running!
