These are gasoline start diesel engines. There's a third valve in each cylinder that opens up to a chamber containing a spark plug, plus some butterfly valves in the intake manifold which switch the air to flow through a carbuertor. In the start position, the engine runs on gasoline using a magneto & conventional spark ignition. Once its warmed up a little, you switch to diesel, at which point the third valves close to increase the compression, the intake air is routed around the carburetor, the magneto is grounded, and the diesel injection pump does its thing.
In theory, you could start one of these with a hand crank in the gas position, although I've never tried it. The engine has to be turning fast enough when you switch to diesel to have enough inertia for compression ignition.
