Andy, as stated the new seals are much thinner and made of a polyurethene, much like seals found in newer vehicles. They do the job. My dealer told me to mount them on the shaft tight to the tractor casting. You can move them enough so they are not in the groove worn by the originals. getting the old seals out takes time and patience, remember, the bearing is behind the seal so you have to be careful not to damage them as you remove the seal. Lots of ideas on seal removal, seal puller doesn't always work, drill small hole and insert metal screw and pull with vise grips, picking chisels work well, cut side of the seal and then collapse the seal out of round, it usually comes then..good luck
