You n the Jim man are tough as nails. I agree cuz the Cutout Relay has BOTH a shunt (lil wires high resistance) and a series (big wire low resistance) winding and if the lil shunt winding isnt grounded she would never pull in allowing a charge as his ammeter seems to indicate happens when he dead grounds the Field i.e BOTH the Genny and Cutout Relay (the VR) must already be grounded. I reckon that leaves a bad regulator (doubt the wire is open) possibly the points (on the field control relay) are stuck or else they need a good non abrasive cleaning to wash off some oil residue maybe??? Only other thing I can think of is a polarity sensitive VR may be problematic maybe it has some suppression diodes or something internally???
