I don't know about reliability, but owned two "projects" for a couple of months...found them will travelling for work, but had no way to get them home(this was about 6 yrs ago). As best I can remember from them, the starting system is very similar to that of the newer diesels; decompression valves open(which is the over-center position of the lever), throttle lever in the gas position(again, over-center position), crank and let run on gas for a couple minutes. When warm, pull both levers out of the over-center position at the same time...you should be rattling the windows now. I'd replace both fuels, put the engine in diesel mode, open the injector lines, and crank awhile just to get fresh diesel right up to the injectors. Good luck and I'd like to see a picture if you can send any.
