Greg, please take no offense at this assertion. I believe there is a very small chance his tractor has non-detergent in it. He indicates the gray oil in it now, (evidence of detergent oil) and is willing to clean the VC and pan. Modern oils and unleaded fuel (with alcohol that dries the water out of the fuel system)are the reason vehicles are lasting as long as they do today. If I knew the engine had been operated on ND oil I would do as he is doing (cleaning), and run the good stuff. Synthetic. Multi-vis.
