Poke in there with a stiff wire and clean the scale out. then use a wire brush for 3/4" soldered pipe fittings to clean the threads (handy little wire brush for many tasks) The threads are 1/2" NPT tapered pipe threads, and should be "pointed". They need to have a pipe thread tap put into the hole and cleaned up. Be sure the cutting edges match the original threads in the block and are started straight. Take out only a minimum of material to get it clean enough to put in a new plug. with a square head. Use one wrap of teflon tape on the threads of the new plug to assure a good seal.
The old petcock is toast, but brass is recycled. Jim
