My 8n used to run out of gas when it got below a 1/2 tank. Pour some more in and it would start up and run fine for several hours then die again. Ran it like that for years, then one time when I looked to see how much was in there, there it was.. A Full complete MAPLE LEAF laying there in the bottom of the tank. Pulled it out, no more problem.
Had a boat with a fuel problem one time, turned out to be a small piece of a plastic worm in the fuel line....
