Allow me to add some more about the I-4 until one of the many more knowledgeable IH guys comes along. As you suspected, it shares much in common with the H, it is considered the industrial version and saw duty in the military, warehouses, industrial plants, airfields, etc. It has the same engine(C152)and basically the same transmission as the H. Although oddly, the shift pattern was changed. I don't have my old I-4 parts manual with me to explain the exact reason but I recall it had something to do with making it easier to use in close quarters where their was a lot of forward and reverse movement. I'll look it up Thursday and let you know. To also make shifting easier, it incorporated a clever braking system that would stop the transmission shaft from spinning when the clutch pedal was depressed.It also should have an accelerator pedal and even hydraulic brakes were available as an option. Mine has a Wagner loader that is powered by a hydraulic pump mounted on the front of the cast frame. It is driven by a linkage on the front of the crankshaft. It features that same cast front frame "tub" that can be found on the 0-4's and I believe the W's also (until they went to steel frame rails later). It allows you to replace the clutch from above without splitting the tractor but it does preclude having the ubiquitous hydraulic belly pump found on so many H models. I really like mine, as Andy said there aren't that many of them but because it can use many H parts, that is a plus. Enjoy
