Dating a Farmall H

I recently tried to date my stepfather's Farmall H. The serial number is 26089J. This number places the tractor as a 1940, but he distinctly remembers buying the tractor BRAND NEW in 1954. Can anyone tell me how this confusion my have been caused. Perhaps the "J" in the serial number changes something, does anyone know what the "J" means. Thanks in advance for anyone with usefull information.
