460D needs rebuild, I need help.

My Father in law has a 460d. Here is the situation. Its hard to start. Takes either or pull start or both sometimes. But when running runs and pulls good. But... smokes and uses a lot of oil soooo...
I know that obviously to do it right it needs a engine kit sleeves pistons etc. I also know that the head will need to be worked. Probably valve seats and valves and who knows what. But it is a fair tractor. My main question is how to decide on the injector pump and injectors because it does run good when running and has good power. I know a couple of the glow plugs arent working. So how do I decide on the pump for sure any tests or things I can do myself. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
