The the front edge of the shroud (the part dragging into the grass as the unit moves into unmowed lawn) should be about 1/2 inch below the cutting edge. this keeps material from spitting out, as well as providing a better air flow out the discharge. If the blades are flat, replacing them with blades that have a flip up at the rear edge will also help air flow. If the homemade deck is all square material, I would weld in some 1/8" sheet to make the primary blade zone fit the blades. The front should be about 1/4th inch lower than the back. JimN
