Long before any of them were worn out, along came tractors like 504, 656, 706, 756, etc., every bit as reliable rear ends and transmissions as SM or SMTA, faster starting more efficient diesels, 3 point hitch with lower link sencing, operator platform very much more user friendly. I could go on and on, however the SMTA was a relic by 1965, and the 656 is still a very modern day tractor.

I bought a very good original SM in a deal with some other equipment, in 1972. I kept it exactly 2 days. Why you may ask? I already had Farmalls 300, 560D, 504 and 656D, all tractors over 35 hp. The SM did not have IPTO, did not have 3 point hitch, did not have that 504-656 platform, did not have a diesel engine. All those other tractors had at least one of those items, necessary in modern day farming in 1972.
