Andy - Depending on the design of the internal regulator if the connection at the #2 (voltage sense) terminal on the alternator is lost it will cause system voltage rise to 16+ volts. If operated like for very long it can result in a complete failure of the alternator. Perhaps this happened in your case? Suggest taking the alterntor to your local NAPA, etc. and have them put it on their test stand. If it turns out the alternator is DOA the cheapest fix is simply to replace it with a rebuilt. Incidentally if the alternator is working correctly the voltmeter should read around 14 - 14.5 volts with the engine running...
