It should pull that fuel into the combustion chamber when you have your hand over the throat of the carburetor. That's how we checked cars and trucks that had mechanical fuel pumps years ago. The engines would run as long as you held your hand over the carburetor. Are you 100% sure your distributor is in time. Even if it's out 180 degrees you will still have fire to your plugs, it just isn't firing at the right time. You need those plug wires installed on the cap in this order too. 2-1 4-3 I would pull No1 plug and bring that piston to TDC on the compression stroke. When you're at TDC your notch on the damper pulley should be aligned with pointer. Both valves on No1 cylinder should be closed too. Remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing.
