The brakes on the H and M are most certainly usable when properly maintained. The bands need to be properly adjusted and have enough friction material left on them. When I get tired of driving my new John Deeres in the various orchards, I jump on the WFE '47 M, hook up a 8' tandem disc (3pt. hitch) and go do pretty work on the perimeter of the grain fields. While the brakes are not comparable to new JD's, the M accomplishs my goals and gives me the joy of working a 53 year old tractor. I am planning on increasing displacement and horsepower of the engine and will have 2 extra sets of brake bands relined for spare parts.
