the on off switch for the ignition was a plunger type switch, you pull it out to turn the ignition on. it works independant of the light switch. your h origionally more than likely had a 4 position light switch, l-h-d-b low- high dim brite. low and hi were for the cutout regulator on the generator. the later charging systems used a voltage regulator, the light switch was o-d-b, off dim brite. going to 12 volt, you can use the 3 position light switch.
