The key differences between the A and B/BN are on the left side. They do indeed look practically identical from the right. The B has a narrow front end, and the rear wheels are the same distance from the transmission on both sides of the B. On an A, the left wheels are tucked right up against the transmission and engine; it's a true "offset" tractor. Only the operator platform is offset on the B.

IH called the A a "one row" tractor because it could only cultivate one row of corn, and the B/BN a "two row" tractor because it's wide enough to cultivate two rows of corn. Horsepower is the same on both.
