The main clutch disengages the transmission but the TA is really two clutches in one assembly. The front clutch, direct drive, is a dry disk clutch like the main clutch. The low side TA clutch is an overrunning style clutch that automatically engages when ever the TA direct drive cluch disengages and the tractor slows down. The TA assembly is a planetary drive type unit which uses the overrunning clutch to hold the planetary carrier from turning while in the TA position. The planetary gears supply the speed reduction. When the lever is moved forward, the TA direct drive clutch engages causing the overrunning clutch to release and the whole assembly turns as one unit.

What happens when you try to shift if only the main clutch disengages and TA direct clutch does not, there is usually enough windup in the drive train to cause the transmission input shaft to turn backwards. This causes the TA overrunning clutch to lock up. With both TA clutches locked up th TA cannot turn backwards so the transmission gears are still under load. This makes it very difficult to get out of gear.

To adjust the TA linkage first make sure the stop pin is on the slot in the bottom of the TA clutch handle. This is a pin that limits the travel to keep the lever from going to far forward.

Remove the pin in the front of the main clutch adjusment clevis. Remove the connecting link and spring between the main clutch shaft and the TA cluch shaft. With the TA lever forward, adjust the linkage rod so that while holding the pin in the clevis forward, it will move about 3/16 inch back in the slot before the bearing touches the levers on the TA clutch cover. This establishes the TA clutch release bearing free travel.

Next adjust the free travel on the main clutch rod so that you have one inch free travel in the clutch pedal when measured at the platform.

Connect the spring between the Main clutch shaft and the TA clutch shaft. Adjust the connecting link between the two so that the pins just enter the clevis without having to move either shaft.

Check the adjustment by operating the controls. When moving the TA lever to the rear, the TA clutch shaft must move as soon as the lever moves. With the TA lever forward, watch as you move the clutch pedal. The TA clutch shaft must move as soon as the pedal moves.

Road test the adjustments by making sure the TA downshifts before the TA lever is is back far enough to engage the latch. Face the tractor uphill. With the transmission in low gear and the TA lever forward, make sure that the tractor will start roll backward when the clutch pedal is about 3/4 of the way depressed. With the clutch fully released, make sure the transmission can be shifted even if the tractor rolls backward a little. With the tractor in first gear, start to release the clutch. Let up a little on the brakes to find the point where the TA will lock up and the tractor stops rolling bacward. From this point, you should need to release the clutch a little more before the tractor starts to move forward. If the tractor starts to move before the TA locks up you will get a double shift wh
