Sounds like too rich one way or another to me. Weather gasket leak, loose manifold, card needs adjusting. Its gas so check the power meter too! I set the power meter to where she dont dog under load (no need to up throttle constantly) and then tweak the mixture. Set it too rich first, it will chug and puff smoke then slooooowly lean it out (turn screw in) till it clears up. I go 1/8 turn then wait few secs till cylinder clear out excess and check again. When its right it will accelerate nice when you throttle it. Too rich it will sputter upon sudden acceleration. Too lean it will pop and backfire or surge. Thats all providing its not a cracked intake or bad gasket. If its not too bad of a leak you can counter it with mixture screw some.
