Oh boy does this sound familliar! I just went, and am still going through, this on my H. what went from water in the rear went to a bad axle bearing and seal to a complete rebuild of the rear end and differential. No, RTV will not work. The top plate on my H was all I wanted to pick up by myself and I can lift a lot. Better get help for the M. and it is easier to lift the top plate off whith the wheel off or at least run them to the ends of the axles, but you are going to have to change at the very least the bearing and seal, you might have to change both inner and outer bearings. Here is one way to tell if the bearings are bad, take a mirror and look at the gap between the top of the axle and the cover and do the same for the bottom side of the axle. If the gap is the same the bearings might be ok. If the gap on top is smaller than the bottom, it is bearing time. One thing you can do is go search some of my old posts. There are a bunch of them for H rear ends. The M rear is very simillar. I had to change 14 bearings total, and I am glad I did even though I am still having a small problem, the old ones were so rough and wore out. Now the wheels move so smooth and nice and I think it may have picked up a few MPH on the top end.
