Have Farmall 400 that was leaking hydraulic oil into the engine. Took hyd. pump off, and the seal was bad, but original. Went to IH dealer and got a new seal, of course it's not as thick. My question being, which is the correct direction of the seal. When I tried to put it in with the spring toward the pump, it would not go and the spring would come off, so I tried it the other way, it went on good. Can't really see what the difference would be, because there is oil on both sides. Hyd. one side, motor oil on the other side. Any opinions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I replaced lots of seals, I'm a mechanic, but this has got me confused. As usually you're trying to keep oil or grease in, and dirt out. Thanks.
