changing fuel filter 424D

Is there a trick to getting fuel back up to the pump after changing the fuel filter? I have fuel comming out the top fitting of the filter bracket on the right side of the engine, but I can't get fuel to come out the other end of the line where it goes into the pump on the left side of the engine. I realize there is a bleeder on the pump but I can't even get it to the pump. thanks
