Gordo - That's the tappet cover, or "pushrod chamber side plate" as it's referred to the parts book. And yes, there is indeed oil behind it! I've not had the cover off on my SH. But I'd suspect that by removing the distributor cap you can probably "worry" the cover off without removing the distributor body. And even if you do have to remove the distributor, simply mark the rotor location on the side of the dist body before removing. Then as long as you do not move the crankshaft with the distributor off, simply align the rotor with the mark you made when you reinstall the distributor and you'll be all set.
