Probably nothing you did. You could have air in the system, or perhaps you lost the prime to the pump, but that should not have happened due to a simple drain and refill. I am not familiar with that particular pump, someone else can tell you how to prime it. I suppose it's possible the previous owner used heavier oil for the very reason you mention. You should have used HyTran or equivalent, which I understand is about the same viscosity as 10W, thus the crud you drained was way too thick.
