Tach Gauge on 504

The tachometer gauge on my 504 works, sometimes. After running for a while it jams and the cable slips. I can pull the cable out and get the gauge loosened up by working it around a bit with something like a nail, but it'll jam again soon after the cable is put back in. Am I likely to have trouble getting it back together if I open it up to clean/lubricate? I have bad memories of taking clocks apart when I was a kid...
