A rubber type seal is a little more forgiving of crankshaft play caused by loose bearings. A felt seal will work fine provided that the bearing clearance is within specs, the crankcase ventilation systems is working properly, and the there is not too much cylinder blowby. Warped seal retainers can also cause a leak between the retainers and the block.
