Touch Control Pistons

I have my SC touch control on the bench preping it for paint. I
was not able to move the lift arms even an inch by hand or with
a rubber mallet in order to remove the pin on the left side lift
arm to remove the leveling link. I finally took the lift arm off the
rock shaft in order to remove the link. Later, I was blowing the
old paint and rust off with an air gun and shot a jet of air into
the oil return opening. The pistons extended fully under the air
flow, and now they are locked in that position. Why was I not able to move the pistons by hand?
Did I force the pistons past a safe point with the air jet?
Am I going to have to open up the cylinders now? I hadn't intended on overhauling the touch control, just clean it
up and paint it. Thanks,
