Paint Question on F-12

Was looking info up to assist on two F-12 projects. Been looking through the archives to see when exactly the paint went from gray to red. All I can find is around Nov. 1936, when the 1937 models came out was when the change was made. Assume this means, according to the serial number listing here that anything before 81837 should be gray. Is this correct, or is this not an exact science? Thanks in advance..
