Hi Hugh, I remember back in the late 60's and early 70's we had a lot of ice storms. They didn't close the schools back then like they do now. The buses were equipped with chains, but we were about one mile from the school, so the buses never picked up the school kids in here. I put studded snow tires on a big Mercury that I had then and my wife would take our daughter to school. My wife said it was amazing the way she could get around on the ice. She said she passed cars that were just spinning and she just pulled around them and the drivers were just staring in disbelief. They outlawed those studded tires here in MD. The mail trucks still use them. Those states MO and KS were hit hard with ice storms. Power lines down and people driving without chains or the cables for radial tires sliding all over the place. Hal
