final drive brake seal?

i just tore down a 1940 A because it had a leaking trans seal i replaced that one got to thinking(that was my first mistake) my 140 has another seal on the final drive behind the brake drum i might as well pull it and replace it while i"m in here well guess what there aint one is this right? why wouldnt the oil in the final drive leak out there? anyway it now has a seal there it miced out as the same as the 140 and i just happened to have one any idea whats up with this?
