Tom, Not only does what you say make sense, its absolutely correct. That DC Genny and a DC Motor are basically the same thing. If you turn them they put out DC Voltage but if you apply DC Voltage then they spin like a motor. What the Cutout Relay does is act as a Normally Open contactor between the genny and battery. When the genny reaches a certain voltage HIGHER then the battery it closes so the gennys output can get to n charge the battery, but then when you turn the tractor off and the gennys output voltage drops, it opens otherwise just as you say the battery would discharge through the genny plus the genny would overhea trying to run as a motor but that belt stopping it.

You can go to the head of the class lol
