Yes a Detroit will run backwards if you put the cam in backwards and reverse the cam gear. Which has been done by one mechanic more than once, without intending to do so. Actually it will run just fine this way, and was designed to be used when needing to reversed the engine direction in a particular application. Which explains why you can actually mount the cam-gear on either end of the camshaft. So moral of this story is not to take the cam-gear off of the camshaft when disassembling a Detroit. Now they also will run in reverse even when not set up to do so, but not very well and not for very long without issues, which is how you find out you put the cam-gear on the wrong end of the camshaft. Or so a "friend" tells me. I also believe it you get a backfire while starting, they can start-up in reverse. Which must be interesting to watch.
