686 Diesel Hydraulic's

My neighbor has a 686 that I help put on a rear blade before the snow flies. Is there any adjustments that can be made on the "float" lever? Seems like it wants to be very hard or to soft, no in-between. When I pushed snow last year I was either digging into the gravel or not taking enough snow. Randy
