Most likely the 4/5th slider gear is worn out, meaning the inside teeth that engage the driving gear are about gone. Being able to hold it in gear with the shifter is another symtom of this situation. It will eventually get to where you can't hold it in if there is any load to speak of though. Also a worn pilot bearing will add to the problem.
