I think your suggestion sounds the most likely. I never did have any problems with the old starter drive, even after I ground almost 1/4" off the end of the gears to smooth them out.
I will try your suggestion at my first opportunity. I really do not have a garage, and a bit cold to work on it outside right now. Am wondering if a few more starts will loosen up the lube on the spiral splines? Thanks for your suggestion(s).
