When you say "top it off" I suspect you are over filling the battery. The correct fill level is the ring about 1/2 to 1 inch down from the top.
Also you asked about a battery that will not spill...yes they make em, They are JELL Batteries and you DO NOT WANT ONE. I learned too late that you cannot fast charge a jell battery and you cannot park one for more than 10 or 12 days (it will go dead) then you have to slow charge it (minimum 48 HRS) I wouldnt have another one even if I could get them FREE.
