To allow for starting without kickback, timing can't be much before TDC, even with an electic starter.

So, as you hand-crank it with the "kill switch" in the "stop position", you will hear the impulse "snap" at #1 TDC.

When it is started, as soon as the impulse cuts out, it advances all at once to running timing.

This advance or "impulse lag angle" is determined by the manufacturer's "specs" for the impulse.

So, with # 1 firing @ TDC while cranking, and the impulse working, and set up properly for the engine, the running timing will be correct.
