I dont know what to tell you to do with them, but here is a good idea if this applies to you.
There is a manhole cover sitting about 1 foot from the ground level acrossed our alley. our dad put an old one from the silverking around it to protect us little kids from bumping the rigid corner of the manhole cover. worked very very well and its still there to this day.
