DC Clutch oil

I changed oil in my 51 DC today and when I drained the clutch compartment, I only got about a half quart at the most. Is this normal or unusual. I thought there should be a quart at least. After I added 8 quarts, the oil did run out of the top plug hole in the side of the pan. This was after it had run for a couple minutes.
